Building a business value proposition using Open Source Software

Undoubtedly, Open Source Software (OSS) is the force behind some of the trendiest technologies in the enterprise segment today. OSS brings quality, no vendor lock-in, ease in deployment and access to code, this combination builds a strong value proposition for business.

Two major surveys in 2016 indicated that about 90% or respondents are using OSS within their enterprise). This shift helps to fulfill long-term enterprise objectives such as addressing their Systems of Engagement which aim to inform and engage employees, customers, partners etc. and Systems of Insight which enable more accurate understanding of customer’s wants & needs expressed across channels.

Understanding what customers want and how to create products and services they value is the cornerstone of any business model. Therefore, at Nividous Labs we have conducted research on how we can leverage OSS strengths to create a strong value proposition for our customers. The answer that we came up with is called the Advisor Platform. It is an enterprise grade solution that integrates best of breed OSS into one single platform. This unified platform will meet all major business needs and can be used to create a new customer base and sustain an existing one.

The Advisor Platform provides an enterprise grade Portal (powered by Liferay TM) with Mobility Support for all major mobile devices. The Advisor Platform has other offerings/modules like BPM Portal (powered by Camunda), OLAP based reporting (powered by Pentaho Mondrian TM), business user friendly UI for managing Business Rules (powered by JBoss Drools TM), and Document Management based on CMIS protocol (powered by Alfresco Community TM). Each of these modules are safe guarded by enabling customized Access Control List (ACL) on top of them.

The Advisor Platform is architected in such a way that each of these modules can work with any other OSS or their equivalent proprietary counter parts. For example, Advisor platform can be configured to use IBM business automation workflow solution as underneath BPM engine instead of any other BPM or such automation solution. Similarly, other modules can also be configured in same fashion. This allows customers to protect their existing investments in proprietary platforms and at the same time take benefit of functionality of adjacent platform for improved efficiency, innovation and interoperability.
